What is TENCEL™ and cellulosic qualities?

In the realm of sustainable fashion, TENCEL™ quality and cellulosic-based yarns are emerging offering a blend of eco-friendliness, comfort, and style. Let’s delve into what makes these fabrics stand out and why they’re becoming increasingly popular choices for conscious consumers and fashion enthusiasts alike.

What is TENCEL™ Quality?

TENCEL™ is a brand quality similar to Lyocell and Modal fibers produced by the Austrian company Lenzing AG. These fibers are derived from sustainably sourced wood pulp, primarily from eucalyptus trees, which are known for their rapid growth and minimal need for irrigation and pesticides. The production process involves a closed-loop system, where solvents used in the manufacturing process are recycled, making it environmentally friendly.

Benefits of TENCEL™ Quality:

1. Softness and Comfort: TENCEL™ fibers are prized for their exceptional softness and smooth texture, making fabrics made from them gentle on the skin and incredibly comfortable to wear.

2. Breathability: TENCEL™ fabrics have excellent moisture-wicking properties, absorbing moisture away from the body and keeping the wearer cool and dry even in warm climates.

3. Durability: Despite their softness, TENCEL™ fibers are remarkably strong and durable, ensuring longevity and resistance to wear and tear.

4. Biodegradability: TENCEL™ fibers are biodegradable, meaning they can naturally decompose at the end of their lifecycle, reducing environmental impact.

Cellulosic-Based Yarns for Fashion Fabrics:

In addition to TENCEL™, other cellulosic-based yarns are also gaining traction in the fashion industry due to their sustainability, aesthetics and performance qualities. These yarns include:

Modal

Similar to TENCEL™, modal is a type of cellulosic fiber derived from beech trees. It shares many of the same benefits, including softness, breathability, and eco-friendliness.

Bamboo

Bamboo fibers are produced from bamboo pulp and are known for their natural antibacterial properties, moisture-wicking abilities, and silky feel. However, it's essential to ensure sustainable bamboo sourcing practices to mitigate environmental concerns associated with some bamboo cultivation methods.

Viscose/Rayon

While not as environmentally friendly as TENCEL™ or modal, viscose or rayon fibers are also derived from wood pulp and are widely used in fashion fabrics due to their affordability, versatility, and soft drape.

Ecovero

Ecovero fibers are derived from sustainably managed wood pulp, sourced from certified renewable forests. The production process adheres to strict environmental standards, as it is certified with the EU Ecolabel, minimizing water and energy consumption, and reducing emissions and waste. Compared to conventional viscose production, Ecovero is one of the most sustainable choices, as Lenzing AG in addition ensures transparency & verification of ethical production practices throughout the supply chain.
