But they are also polymers, and like other synthetic textiles, they can release microscopic plastic fibres as the material is manufactured, worn, washed and gradually ages.

So, do swimsuits release microplastics?

Yes. Synthetic swimwear can release microplastic fibres. The strongest scientific evidence concerns fibre release during washing, while research into release during actual swimming is still developing.

What Are Microplastics?

Microplastics are very small particles of plastic. The European Chemicals Agency describes them as solid plastic particles composed of polymers and notes that they can form unintentionally when larger plastic materials — including synthetic textiles — wear and tear.

When the particles have a fibre-like shape, they are commonly referred to as microplastic fibres or synthetic microfibres.

This distinction matters.

All textiles can shed fibres. Cotton, wool and other natural materials can also release microscopic fibres.

But a fibre released from polyester, polyamide or another persistent synthetic polymer is fundamentally different from a natural cellulose fibre: it is a plastic particle.

Why Can Synthetic Swimwear Shed Microplastic Fibres?

A synthetic swimsuit is essentially a textile structure made largely from plastic-based fibres.

During its life, the fabric is exposed to repeated mechanical and environmental stress:

stretching and movement

friction against the body and surfaces

washing

saltwater or chlorinated water

sunlight and UV exposure

repeated wetting and drying

Over time, individual fibres or fragments can separate from the textile structure.

Laboratory studies have directly measured microplastic-fibre release from polyester and polyamide fabrics during washing. Research also shows that the amount released can vary considerably according to the fibre, yarn, fabric construction and washing conditions.

Washing Is the Best-Documented Release Pathway

The strongest evidence concerns laundering.

Studies examining synthetic garments and fabrics have repeatedly detected microscopic fibres in washing water.

One study investigating polyester, polyamide and other fabrics found fibre shedding from all the materials examined, while temperature, detergent and washing-machine type influenced the amount released.

Another study estimated hundreds of thousands to more than one million fibres per kilogram of clothing under the specific washing conditions tested.

These figures should not be treated as a universal emission rate.

A 2025 critical review concluded that differences in testing methods, washing programmes, detergents and measurement techniques make direct comparison between studies difficult. There is still no universally standardised protocol for quantifying textile microfiber release.

What About While You Are Swimming?

This question requires more nuance.

It is tempting to assume that because a synthetic swimsuit is directly immersed in the sea, it must release a known quantity of microplastics while swimming.

At present, science does not provide enough swimwear-specific evidence to quantify that release reliably.

We know that synthetic textiles can shed fibres through mechanical wear as well as washing. Research on polyester clothing has demonstrated fibre release through everyday wear and abrasion, including release into the air.

Swimwear also experiences an unusually demanding combination of conditions: stretching, movement, water, salt or chlorine, sunlight and repeated wet–dry cycles.

Recent research specifically examining knitted swimwear fabrics made with polyamide, polyester and elastane found that prolonged seawater and sunlight ageing altered their structure and mechanical performance. Combined seawater and sunlight exposure produced measurable weakening in some mechanical properties.

However, that study investigated fabric ageing and mechanical performance, not the number of microplastic fibres released into the sea during swimming.

So the accurate answer is:

Synthetic swimwear has the physical potential to shed fibres during use and ageing, but to date, measurable microplastic release has been documented through washing, while direct release during swimming remains insufficiently studied.

Does Older Swimwear Release More?

Ageing matters, but the relationship is not simple enough to say that every older swimsuit necessarily releases a specific amount more microplastic.

Fibres are held within yarns and textile structures. Repeated mechanical stress and environmental exposure can change those structures.

For swimwear in particular, seawater and sunlight have now been shown experimentally to affect the mechanical behaviour of synthetic knitted fabrics.

More broadly, textile research identifies fabric construction, yarn structure, fibre type and manufacturing characteristics as factors that can influence shedding.

A major 2024 systematic review, however, found that many published studies were unable to demonstrate clear causal relationships between individual textile characteristics and fibre emissions.

In other words, the fabric itself matters — but textile science is still determining exactly which constructions minimise shedding most effectively.

Polyester, Nylon and Elastane: Are They All Microplastic Sources?

When fragments of persistent synthetic polymer fibres become sufficiently small, they can fall within definitions of microplastics.

That includes the principal materials used in conventional swimwear:

Polyester
A synthetic polymer widely used for durability and dimensional stability.

Polyamide / Nylon
A synthetic polymer frequently used because of its smoothness, strength and elasticity.

Elastane / Spandex
A highly elastic synthetic polymer generally blended with polyester or polyamide to provide stretch.

This is why the microplastic question is not simply about whether a swimsuit contains recycled or virgin material.

It begins with something more fundamental:

What is the textile actually made from?

Does Recycled Polyester Solve the Microplastic Problem?

Recycling synthetic material can reduce demand for virgin fossil-based raw material and can play an important role in textile circularity.

But recycled polyester remains polyester.

It does not become a natural fibre simply because its previous source was another plastic product.

Research published in 2024 comparing several synthetic textile materials found microplastic-fibre release from both virgin and recycled polyester under the experimental washing conditions, with recycled polyester releasing more in that particular study.

Fabric construction and processing also matter.

This means that recycling plastic and eliminating microplastic shedding are two different environmental questions.

What Happens to Fibres After Washing?

When synthetic swimwear is washed, some of the microplastic fibres it sheds are carried away with the wastewater.

Wastewater treatment plants can capture many of these fibres, but not all of them. Some may remain in treated wastewater and eventually reach rivers, lakes or the sea. Others are captured in sewage sludge, meaning they are removed from the water but do not simply disappear.

This is why microplastic pollution from synthetic textiles does not end with the washing machine. Once plastic fibres are released from a garment, they enter a wider environmental pathway.

Research also shows that fibre release can occur during textile manufacturing, making microplastic shedding an issue that can extend across different stages of a garment’s life cycle.

fibre → yarn → fabric → garment → washing → wastewater → environment

Natural Fibres Change the Microplastic Equation

Natural textiles can also shed microscopic fibres. But microfibres and microplastics are not the same thing.

A Note on the Word “Microfiber”

The term microfiber describes a very fine fibre — not a specific material. A microfiber can be natural or synthetic, depending on what it is made from.

This distinction is often blurred in everyday language. Many products sold simply as “microfiber” are actually made from polyester, polyamide, or blends of the two. Calling them only “microfiber” describes the fineness of the fibres, but not their chemical composition.

So a cotton microfibre and a polyester microfibre are not the same thing. One is cellulose-based and comes from a natural fibre; the other is made from a synthetic plastic polymer.

And when discussing environmental pollution, that distinction becomes important:

microfibre ≠ microplastic
synthetic plastic microfibre → can be a microplastic fibre

Cotton is a natural fibre composed primarily of cellulose, a naturally occurring plant-based polymer. Polyester and polyamide, by contrast, are synthetic plastic polymers derived from petrochemical feedstocks.

This difference matters. When a conventional synthetic swimsuit sheds polyester or polyamide fibres, it releases plastic-derived particles. When cotton sheds fibres, it does not add the same type of persistent synthetic plastic to the environment.

Natural fibres such as cotton also have the ability to biodegrade under suitable environmental conditions, whereas conventional synthetic fibres are far more resistant to degradation and can persist in the environment, gradually fragmenting into smaller particles.

This gives natural fibres a clear advantage when looking specifically at microplastic pollution: replacing synthetic fibres with natural ones reduces the amount of plastic built into the textile in the first place — and therefore the potential source of persistent microplastic fibres.

Natural fibres are not without environmental impacts. Cultivation, processing, dyeing, finishing and garment durability must all be considered when evaluating the overall footprint of a textile.

But when the question is specifically microplastic pollution, fibre composition is fundamental: less synthetic plastic in the textile means less plastic available to become microplastic pollution.

Can Swimwear Be Made Without Conventional Synthetic Fabric?

Historically, this has been difficult.

Swimwear requires properties that ordinary cotton fabrics do not naturally provide:

stretch

recovery

shape stability when wet

controlled water absorption

dimensional stability

This is one reason polyester, polyamide and elastane became dominant in modern swimwear.

But textile performance depends not only on fibre chemistry.

It also depends on yarn engineering and fabric architecture.

Pepper Vally® developed YDOR™ Cotton as a different approach: a patented 3D knitted swimwear structure composed of approximately 98.2% cotton with no more than 1.8% elastic material, engineered so that cotton remains in direct contact with the skin. The elastic component is kept to a minimum and fully encapsulated within the cotton structure, designed to minimise microplastic-fibre shedding.

Instead of making plastic the dominant fibre and trying to manage its shedding afterwards, the design begins by drastically reducing the synthetic component of the textile itself.

Explore YDOR™ Cotton Swimwear technology

Material Choice Comes Before Microplastic Capture

Much discussion around textile microplastics focuses on solutions at the washing stage:

filters, washing bags, lower temperatures, shorter cycles and improved wastewater treatment.

These approaches can be useful.

But there is another question upstream:

How much persistent synthetic polymer does the garment need to contain in the first place?

For conventional swimwear, the answer has historically been: almost all of it.

Textile innovation makes it possible to reconsider that assumption.

Reducing plastic at the material-design stage does not eliminate every environmental impact associated with clothing.

But it addresses microplastic pollution closer to its source.

Quick Answer: Do Swimsuits Release Microplastics?

Synthetic swimsuits can release microplastic fibres.

Scientific evidence is strongest for fibre release during washing. Synthetic textiles can also shed through wear and abrasion, while direct microplastic release from swimsuits during swimming remains less well quantified.

The amount released depends on the polymer, yarn, fabric construction, garment ageing and conditions of use and washing.

So the most scientifically accurate statement is not that every swimsuit releases the same amount of microplastic.

It is that a swimsuit made predominantly from synthetic polymers contains a persistent plastic-fibre source capable of shedding throughout its life cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do polyester swimsuits release microplastics?

Yes. Polyester is a synthetic plastic polymer, and polyester textiles have been experimentally shown to release microplastic fibres.

Does nylon swimwear release microplastics?

Yes. Polyamide — commonly known as nylon — is a synthetic plastic polymer, and polyamide textiles have been experimentally shown to release microplastic fibres.

Do swimsuits release microplastics directly into the ocean?

Synthetic swimwear can shed fibres through mechanisms such as wear and abrasion. However, research has not yet established a swimwear-specific rate of microplastic release during actual swimming.

Is recycled polyester microplastic-free?

No. Recycled polyester is still a synthetic plastic polymer and can release microplastic fibres.

In fact, some studies have found recycled polyester to release more microplastic fibres than virgin polyester under the tested washing conditions. However, this should not be generalised to all recycled polyester fabrics, as fibre shedding also depends on yarn structure, fabric construction, finishing and use conditions.

Recycling can reduce the need for virgin plastic, but it does not eliminate the microplastic shedding associated with synthetic fibres.

Does cotton release microplastics?

No. Cotton does not release microplastics because cotton itself is not plastic. It is a natural, plant-based fibre composed primarily of cellulose.

Like all textiles, cotton can shed microscopic fibres. But a cotton microfibre is not a microplastic fibre.

This distinction is important: cotton microfibres are cellulose-based and biodegradable under suitable environmental conditions, whereas polyester and other synthetic microplastic fibres are far more resistant and can persist in the environment for long periods of time.

So while both cotton and synthetic textiles can shed microfibres, what they leave behind in the environment is fundamentally different.

Scientific Note

Scientific research has established that synthetic textiles can release microplastic fibres, particularly during washing. Direct microplastic release from swimwear during actual swimming, however, remains insufficiently studied. This article therefore distinguishes between what has been experimentally documented and what remains under scientific investigation.

Research References

Tedesco, Fisher & Stuetz — Science of the Total Environment (2024)
Emission of fibres from textiles: A critical and systematic review of mechanisms of release during machine washing.
DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2024.177090

Luzi et al. — Chemosphere (2025)
Critical review of microfiber release from textiles: Results, comparative challenges, mitigation strategies, and legislative perspectives.
DOI: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2025.144394

Yang et al. — Environmental Pollution (2019)
Microfiber release from different fabrics during washing.
DOI: 10.1016/j.envpol.2019.03.011

De Falco et al. — Scientific Reports (2019)
The contribution of washing processes of synthetic clothes to microplastic pollution.
DOI: 10.1038/s41598-019-43023-x

De Falco et al. — Environmental Science & Technology (2020)
Microfiber Release to Water, Via Laundering, and to Air, via Everyday Use: A Comparison between Polyester Clothing with Differing Textile Parameters.
DOI: 10.1021/acs.est.9b06892

Akyildiz et al. — Environmental Pollution (2024)
Release of microplastic fibers from synthetic textiles during household washing.
DOI: 10.1016/j.envpol.2024.124455

Vanja, Potočić Matković & Salopek Čubrić — Materials (2025)
Seawater and Sunlight as Critical Ageing Factors Affecting the Mechanical Performance of Knitted Swimwear Fabrics.
DOI: 10.3390/ma18235346

European Chemicals Agency (ECHA)
Microplastics — definitions, sources and regulatory information.

About the Author

This article is written and reviewed by the Pepper Vally® Textile Engineering Team in Athens, Greece.

Pepper Vally® develops and produces patented cotton swimwear fabrics in-house (PCT/GR2025/000001), combining textile science, natural fibres and performance-oriented knitted structures.

Do Swimsuits Release Microplastics?
